Protect Your Children From Cyber Stalkers
The Child Online Protection Act has been a major legislation in the United States of America, enacted in 1998 with the stated intention of restricting access to any material on the Internet, specifically defined as dangerous to such children. The act established a child safe internet filter, a blockage tool that effectively filters out material that is not suitable for viewing by anyone younger than the age of twelve. At present, a child is considered old enough to be able to understand the dangers on the Internet and he or she can decide for him or herself whether or not he wishes to view potentially dangerous materials on the Internet. In other words, the Child Online Protection Act tries to protect children from harm online.
This act has indeed achieved its aim of putting a stop to those naughtinesssome sites that prey on children and lure them into viewing things that are too adult in nature. But the impact of the act has been greater than anticipated. The Child Online Protection Act has led to many other laws being implemented. For instance, the United States Department of Justice seeks to put every school on an internet monitoring program. School officials believe that such programs will help in protecting children from being harassed or having inappropriate relationships with individuals who are in their teenage hood.
Moreover, the Internet itself has become a haven for predators. And children are being left behind in the comfort of their homes while they are subjected to online harassment by adults who pose as harmless students. Such acts may not just harm a child physically but emotionally as well. Parents should be made aware of such hazards on the Internet and the rights that they have regarding their child’s privacy on the Internet and about their child’s right to privacy when it comes to surfing the Internet. It is high time that parents learn how to make their child safe in the cyberworld.
How do we make our child safe when the Internet is not that much separated from the real world? We could start by giving tips and guidance to our children. That does not mean that we would prohibit our children from using the Internet but at least we could monitor the activities that they are undertaking online. We could, for example, block inappropriate contents or we could monitor the locations where they visit to prevent them from being in danger. In fact, there are many children online today that might have heard about a program called “Cyber Stalkers” but are unaware of the fact that it exists and are taking advantage of the situation.
There are some parents who are unaware that there are actually programs available that allow parents to track the activity that their child may be undertaking online. This kind of software will allow you to see what your child is doing in different areas of the Internet and at different times. If there are sites that your child is viewing that is not supposed to be viewed by the public, then you can see the site log.
Of course, there are many children online today that are trying to gain access to “bad news” about certain public figures. There are even some instances where a child may want to spread rumors about his/her parents or worse, their own school and this can lead to legal action. This can also lead to the child having to remain offline and that is not a good situation for a child. It would certainly not do any good for their studies. Parents today have to be very careful as they are being monitored by cyber stalkers all the time.
In fact, some parents are unaware that the Child Online Protection Act has been enacted into law. Most of us never even knew that such a thing existed until the recent news stories regarding this matter. It is pretty scary to think that our child could be performing some very bad activities in front of a computer and we do not have an idea of what these activities are.
Unfortunately, it seems like child online protection acts are not enough to protect our children any more. The cyber world seems to be growing every day and it is easy for a child to get caught up in it and begin to do things that they should not be doing in front of a computer screen. As parents, we need to be aware of all of the available options that we have when it comes to protecting our children. We also need to keep in mind that there are predators out there that are taking advantage of this current legislation. It is our responsibility to be sure that our children are protected at all times.
